What are the industrial maintenance standards?

With the professionalization and sophistication of industrial maintenance, standards have multiplied. It is now essential for maintenance managers to know as best as possible the normative framework that applies to their activity. It is composed of standards specific to maintenance activities themselves, but also those that apply to related activities.
The main standards of industrial maintenance
The maintenance normative framework is very broad, but below you will find the most important maintenance standards.
The classification of maintenance actions
One of the best known maintenance standards is NF EN 13306 X 60-319, which defines the main terms of maintenance. Thus, the term “maintenance” is described as “the set of all technical, administrative and management actions during the life cycle of an asset, intended to maintain or restore it to a condition in which it can perform the required function.”
This standard also specifies the main types of maintenance :
- preventive maintenance, “maintenance performed at predetermined intervals or according to prescribed criteria and intended to reduce the probability of failure or the deterioration of the functioning of an asset”, which is itself divided into systematic, conditional and predictive maintenance;
- corrective maintenance, “maintenance carried out after detection of a failure and intended to restore an asset to a condition in which it can perform a required function”.
The standard NF X 60-000 For its part, it presents the guidelines for designing a company's maintenance process in order to meet its technical and economic challenges. In particular, it integrates the various maintenance levels, from level 1 to level 5, depending on the interventions to be carried out and the skills required.

Key performance indicators for maintenance
To define accurate performance indicators and accurately measure the effectiveness of maintenance interventions, the standard NF IN 17007 is the reference. It gives a generic description of maintenance processes and makes it possible to establish a maintenance model, while providing indications for determining the associated indicators. The NF EN 15341 standard complements it, by integrating these indicators into a dynamic maintenance process. The definition of the right indicators then makes it possible to monitor them in dashboards and analysis tools in order to assess the effectiveness of the associated maintenance actions.

Other maintenance standards
The standard NF IN 15628 specify the qualifications of maintenance personnel. The series of standards NF EN 60300 describes the dependability framework for all processes, systems, services, and products that integrates human, software, or hardware aspects. It is important for the planning and implementation of operational safety activities. The standard NF IN 16646 describes maintenance processes in the context of physical asset management.
Know the standards related to maintenance
Some standards do not apply directly to maintenance activities themselves but must be known and taken into account by professionals in the sector.
Maintainability of the equipment
The X60-000 series of standards is largely devoted to requirements and criteria to be followed in terms of maintainability. The standards X60310, X60313, NF EN 60706 and X60315, in particular, constitute a guide to the maintainability of equipment: requirements, planning and logistics, diagnostic tests, statistical methods for evaluating maintainability, etc.
Quality management: the ISO 9001 standard
Since the scope covered by a company's quality management system is very broad, some maintenance activities are covered by the ISO 9001 standard, such as the compliance of production assets or physical assets.
The 21 CFR 11 standard
The 21 CFR Part 11 standard was written by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to ensure the validity of electronic documents, the authenticity of electronic signatures, and their reliability. It concerns all companies in the pharmaceutical, cosmetic and food sectors that sell products in the United States.
This standard covers all aspects of enterprises' production activities. Therefore, all maintenance related documents (for example, the history of interventions) must meet the requirements of 21 CFR 11.
The accumulation of standards that weigh on maintenance activities can appear to be a particularly burdensome constraint. However, a large part of these represent an opportunity to improve processes in order to increase productivity, provided that we haveadapted and efficient tools, such as a new generation mobile CMMS.
